Khiva has always been a museum under the open sky: the Ichan-Kala fortress, minarets, ancient lanes protected by UNESCO. Now, just 4 km from the old walls, it has a satellite town: the Arda Khiva tourist complex. Think Khiva in miniature, but with a waterpark, gondola canals and evening shows. Here is what's inside and why it makes a great base for exploring Khorezm.
What is Arda Khiva?
The complex spreads across 25 hectares on the road from Urgench to Khiva. The name means "port city": the Amu Darya river once flowed here. You enter through the carved Kosh-Darvoza gates and find a replica of the Kalta Minor tower, an oriental bazaar, an artisan quarter and 2 km of canals where gondolas glide past medieval style facades. Locals have nicknamed it the "Venice of the East."
Things to Do
Umma Park waterpark and SPA. A lifesaver in the desert heat and a magnet for families.
Kala Bala kids' center. Drop the kids off and browse the bazaar in peace.
Gondola rides. The most photogenic way to see the complex.
Musical fountain and an amphitheater with 3,000 seats. Concerts and shows in the evening, and an international opera festival was held here in May 2026.
Artisan workshops. Watch Khivan jewelers (zargars) at work, continuing traditions that date back to the Middle Ages.
Where to Stay
The complex has 5 hotels and 13 guest houses, over 1,000 beds in total.
Arda Oasis. The most luxurious option in the lineup.
Arda Turon. A modern hotel for travelers who value comfort.
Miraj. A boutique hotel with character.
Karvon Saroy. Styled after a Silk Road caravanserai.
Sangar & Angariki. A cozy stay with traditional flair.

Getting There
Since May 2026, the high speed Jaloliddin Manguberdi train runs from Tashkent to Khiva in about 7.5 hours, down from 13 or 14. From Urgench, the complex is a 20 minute taxi ride, and Urgench airport has flights from Tashkent and Moscow.
hurma.uz Tip
The perfect combo: one or two nights at Arda Khiva (waterpark, shows, downtime) plus a day or two in old Khiva. Walk Ichan-Kala at sunrise before the tour groups arrive. Book early: the best rooms for the autumn season sell out over the summer.
